13 February: 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm£5.50
– Speakers’ Corner: Mary Borden, Famous and Infamous
Heroine, Celebrity and Author AND Local Resident
This talk about a Chicago born heroine of WW1 sees the welcome return of speaker, Gary Shaeffer. He is former Director of Popperfoto and custodian of an extensive archive of historic photographs.
His subject this evening, Mary Borden 1886-1968, described as one of the conflict’s ‘forgotten heroines’ was a nurse and activist. Throughout her life a prolific writer and a poet recently celebrated in London for her war sonnets.
Mary, an heiress who led an extraordinary life as a social celebrity, with a series of scandalous love affairs to her name, played a significant role in the cultural life of 1900’s London and Parisian circles. It is surprising then to discover that she had a ‘local connection’ with Great Brington, which Gary will reveal in his illustrated discussion of her life.
