– Lifeboats: The Desperate Rescue of SS Rohilla, 1914 –
Mike Major is a life-long volunteer with RNLI and now Chairman of the Lifeboat Management Group of Whitby Lifeboat Station. He will reach back over 100 years to the early hours of the morning of October 14th 1914. WW1 hospital ship, SS Rohilla, carrying medical staff to Dunkirk, is floundering in a violent storm off Whitby’s jagged rocks. Mike will tell the story of the desperate 3-day attempt to rescue passengers and ship. The disaster is described by one survivor as, ’…being worse than the sinking of the Titanic’.
