In Pedro Almodóvar’s ‘Pain and Glory’ – which is fictional but partially autobiographical – Antonio Banderas plays Salvador Mallo, an aging film-director experiencing illness and creative block. He is invited to a 30th anniversary screening of his ’80s hit ‘Sabor’ following which he attempts to reconcile himself with his past.
He sifts through his life in a more vibrant past as a series of flashbacks to old relationships and memories that shaped his life, including his childhood devotion to his mother, Jacinta(Penélope Cruz), his first boyish crush, his first mature relationship with a genuine lover, and the forces that allowed him to define himself through the world of cinema.
Vivid, reflective and touching, the memories charge the fading director with a renewed self-respect and hope.

The Guardian
As the title suggests, the result is a tragicomic swirl of heartbreak and joy, slipping dexterously between riotous laughter and piercing sadness.
Alberto Iglesias’s lovely score perfectly matches the shifting tones of the drama…………. and I felt that this movie was running so smoothly and so seductively that it could have gone on for another five hours.
There is a masterful nimbleness in Almodóvar’s narrative style: one thing leads on to another, or back or sideways to another.
Roger Ebert
Almodóvar’s film captures the way life is reflected in art in ways that only a master filmmaker could possibly even attempt. It’s a deeply personal and very moving film, anchored by the best work of Antonio Banderas’ career.
In the flashbacks, the wonderful Penelope Cruz plays Mallo’s mother, and, again, the long working relationship between actor and auteur clearly influences the final product.
Banderas never once feels like he’s doing an Almodóvar impression, and yet their friendship clearly influenced the performance in ways that other actors couldn’t have possibly understood.
The Observer
‘Pain and Glory’ is Pedro Almodóvar’s best and most moving film in years…………….The film also reunites the renowned director with his closest friend and professional partner, Antonio Banderas, in a dazzling performance that showcases his rarely explored vulnerability as an actor.
The Independent
It’s a wonderfully evocative affair with a subtle, soulful performance from Antonio Banderas.
Almodóvar, though, knows how to make the simplest moments in Salvador’s recreated life seem poignant and poetical.
