– Anatomy of a Fall –

Cinephile/Mainstream Courtroom Drama

After a man falls to his death in mysterious circumstances, his wife (Sandra Hüller) becomes the prime suspect in this complex and slow-burning crime drama which features emotionally intense courtroom sequences.  Did he fall from the attic in which he was working? Did he jump? Or was he pushed?

She employs as her lawyer an old friend (Swann Arlaud) who may be in love with her. Yet her fate may lie in the hands of Daniel, her blind son, who saw nothing at all, yet might still remember something convenient at any moment.

With him as the only witness, the family’s background as well as events before and after the fall are examined in forensic detail in the authority’s attempts to arrive at the truth – and painful truths are revealed.

The Telegraph – Justine Triet’s breathtaking new film unpicks the aftermath of a fatal accident in the Alps. ………This event focuses the legal, forensic and psychoanalytical minds of dozens of people, obsesses several, and will define the futures of at least two.  A freak accident is the least likely theory.

What follows– is an intellectual thriller of rare calibre, assembled so precisely and deepening so richly it continually takes your breath away. This script is a diamond.

Triet dazzles us here with legal minutiae, the strange crucible of this courtroom process for exploring the lives of others, weighing up everything that’s provable, and what’s not – love, for instance.

Hüller, Triet’s perfect accomplice, seizes the day with a wonderful performance, assembling the type of 360º character portrait Liv Ullmann used to manage for Bergman.

The Times – The clichés of the courtroom thriller are given a prestige makeover here by the French director Justine Triet, who duly nabbed the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The real twist here, however (no spoiler), is that Triet essentially shifts focus midway through trial from the murder to the marriage……………… Sober, mature film-making.

Empire – Accident, suicide, or murder? Hüller gives credibility to every possibility at once, ………the ambiguity could become tiresome, but thanks to a perceptive script delivered by a strong cast— plus a scene-stealing performance from Messi the border collie as Daniel’s canine companion Snoop — Triet maintains momentum.

At the film’s core is a dissection not of a death but of the disintegration of a marriage.

Surprisingly gripping for a film devoid of real action, this family drama masquerading as a murder-mystery touches on universal marital tensions; it is both enigmatic and very human.

The Guardian – Electric Palme d’Or-winning courtroom thriller – A tantalising screenplay keeps the audience guessing in Justine Triet’s gripping French drama.

Perhaps more than most genres, the courtroom drama succeeds or fails on the strength of its screenplay. And here, with its layered and rewardingly intricate script, this solid, unshowy film excels.………… the courtroom drama here is electric, restlessly dynamic and compulsively watchable, with only a few rare moments in which the film’s throttling hold on the audience loosens.

Hüller’s calm directness as an actor is what gives the film its texture, substance and emotional force.
