The Telegraph

Benedict Cumberbatch shines in this gripping true-life espionage thriller……….The star is on top form as Greville Wynne,

Director Dominic Cooke, a theatre veteran and former artistic director of the Royal Court, is making his second foray into cinema here (his first was the 2018 adaptation of On Chesil Beach).

His sturdy, old-fashioned approach to staging and shooting pairs well with his leading actor’s precise, engaging performance………….it also enhances the shock value of a late shift in tone, when the mission goes awry and the film’s classical polish is replaced by a starker, more menacing visual style ………………a fine way to keep a thriller’s dramatic motor running smoothly.

The Spectator

The film perfectly captures time and place, with terrific production design, while the taut music captures our constant anxiety. The script is smartly spare and that, combined with Cooke’s sure-handed yet pacey direction, ensures that we understand what is happening without it ever having to be spelled out.

The two leads cannot be faulted. Ninidze’s performance is such that Penkovsky’s apprehension — for his country, his family, himself, his new friend — is conveyed just by the look in his eyes. As for Cumberbatch, he takes a character that could have been a buffoon and gives him true depth and heart.

Rotten Tomatoes

“The Courier” delivers a rousingly effective old-school spy adventure elevated by a thrilling fact-based story and Benedict Cumberbatch’s nervy central performance.  Benedict Cumberbatch is terrific in hooking the viewer in while the slow-burning story shifts into gear.
